We love adding a pop of texture in our designs, which is where grasses with interesting seed heads come in! These 1/2 to 1 inch long seed heads range in colour from light green when young, and develop into a lovely golden shade when dried or left to mature further on the plan. While these stems are dainty, they provide beautiful movement in bouquets or arrangements.
Also known as big quaking grass, rattlesnake grass, and large quaking grass.
Approximate Seeds per Packet: approx. 75
Variety/Hardiness: Annual
Sunlight: Full to part sun
Mature Height: 20–30"
Germination: 7-14 days at 18-21°C
Sowing:
Transplant (recommended): Sow 5-7 weeks before the last frost. Cover the seed lightly (1/8" deep). Harden off and transplant out after risk of frost has passed.
Direct Seeding: Direct seed after risk of frost has passed; cover lightly (1/8" deep) and maintain moisture levels to ensure germination.
Care: Once established, Quaking Grass can be tolerant of drier growing conditions.
Harvest:
Fresh: Select seed heads that are mature but still appear green & have not yet shed their pollen.
Dried: Havest similar to fresh use. Hang to dry. Seed heads will develop beautiful golden colour during drying process.
TIP: Seed heads that are picked after the pollen has shed will be more prone to shattering. Similarly, if harvested in the golden stage, shattering is also more likely, especially for dried use.
Note: Quaking Grass may self-seed in the area it was planted the previous year. Free flowers!
